I know, I know, it’s been a while. Welcome to the Aquabumps offshore edition, where we broadcast from the wave-rich Mecca of Mentawai – a very remote part of the world that I visit annually.
Yesterday was a classic; whilst farming a nuggety left, filling our wave quotas, a blue catamaran sped into the line-up. Travelling at 20 knots and Latino music blaring, we knew it wasn’t your typical charter boat (fast = fuel burn = big$). It was a private boat – which is uncommon up here – owned by a Brazilian family.
World Champ Italo Ferreira (doobey gold chains and all) steps off the stern and paddles into some of the heavier tubes. What a treat! Italo’s first time to the islands where he’s filming his latest film before he heads to the next WSL stop – The Ranch.
For an hour Italo went bezerk. I’m talking airs on the end ledge (nuts) and deepest tubes of the day. After an hour, Italo returned to the boat and disappeared as fast as he appeared.
The weather has been amazing, and the waves are good. It’s early season, but most of the fleet is stalking uncrowded perfection.
I’m not sure when I’ll find another island with satellite internet, but that will be the next time I post!
Have a good week, :: uge
