Newcastle

I’ve driven past Newcastle a hundred times but rarely stopped. To be honest, I didn’t know much about the joint…but after spending a weekend there I have a new found respect for this vibrant coastal city.

‘Newy’ is 160 clicks north of Sydney and has an incredible set of beaches, all with promising surfing setups. The waves were small all weekend, so I didn’t get to see the brilliant Merewether Beach light up, but I can see how you could connect a right all the way down the reef on its day.

Five things you may not know about Newcastle:

  • Newy is a major port and the largest exporter of Coal in the world!
  • Newcastle is home to famous surfers like (four-time world champ) Mark Richards, Craig Anderson, Nicky Wood, Travis Lynch, Ryan Callinan, The Hoys, Mitch Ross,The Egans, Peter McCabe…and recently Julian Wilson.
  • Stockton Beach is 32 kms long and you can 4wd up it.
  • 738 foot Pasha Bulker ran aground on 8 June 2007 on Nobbys Beach. Took 3 attempts to set the ship free.
  • Over 500,000 people live in Newcastle – more than you think… enjoying its mild all year temperate weather conditions.

Check it out.

  1. So good to see my hometown through your lens, also another cool fact of Newie; First town in Australia to have a woman as Lord Mayor!

    1. I thought you’d like the shots today Chaci. Loved Newy. Will go back. What a great little city with epic waves.

  2. Awesome to see Newy from your perspective!!!! Can’t wait to see more when you come back. ??????

  3. So glad I grew up there on one of the beaches and enjoyed it when it was a laid back town and you could buy a house near the beach and not have a mountain of debt. It is such a shame it is becoming too big and houses so unaffordable. You cant even get a park to enjoy the pool at 630 am. Its sad.

    1. Hey Jay, Loved Newy. Plenty of parks at all main beaches on the weekend. I still think it’s pretty laid back – don’t be sad!

  4. So glad to see you’ve ventured up to shoot Newcastle’s beauty. Have been waiting for a series on my home town for so long. Look amazing and so awesome to see it from a new perspective.
Definitely will have to head back for surf! Would love to see some ariel shots over Dixon, Bar and Merewether Beach strip next time you head back!
