Have you seen what’s happening with the surf at the Gold Coast? It’s pumping. The first phase of Tropical Cyclone Alfred is delivering an endless array of waves hitting the beloved points, and the footage on social media is driving me wild.
I’m experiencing extreme FOMO whilst rolling down to Bondi this morning, where the waves were head-high, messy, with two guys out in the south and rain looming. Very unexciting down here! I’m much rather be at snapper on the back of a ski.
Alfred update – Tropical Cyclone Alfred has intensified into a Category 2 system with wind gusts reaching up to 130 km/h. The cyclone is currently located approximately 560 km east of Brisbane and is expected to turn westward later today, potentially making landfall just north of Brisbane between late Thursday and Friday morning.
The last tropical cyclone to directly impact New South Wales as a cyclone (not just as a remnant low) was Tropical Cyclone Nancy in 1990. Nancy made landfall near Byron Bay as a Category 2 system, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall. Since then, most tropical cyclones weaken into tropical lows before reaching NSW…
It’s going to be interesting to see what happens later this week.
