Bondi 6:40am A nice little left grinder...hit the lip buddy.

Shoreline meanderings

Hurro. What a nice day (again). Yesterday’s healthy 3 foot increase in swell is still here and there’s some really fun waves in town. Bondi was 2-3 foot at sunrise, closing out a little, but multiple peaks doing their thing (it’s nice to have more options along the beach instead of the 1 peak we’ve had for months).

The forecast looks bleak. It’s fading today into very small stereotypical summer 1 footers. The weather is going to be ridiculously good over the weekend though so hit the beach.

I can’t believe how many people are surprised when we say we’ve got a 200 sqm gallery where these images are beautifully framed and blown up huge (some nearly 2 metres wide). Yes, we have a gallery! It’s in Bondi and we’ve been open for 7 years. You will find us at 151 Curlewis Street, Bondi Beach and we’re open every single day except Mondays, 10am to 6pm (including both days on the weekend). We ship globally (yes! US and UK are too easy). Ok enough spruik – you know it.

Two Degrees For Africa

What goes down in East Africa is heavy. They need help. If you watch this video I reckon you’ll agree. A group of friends have got together and doing something about it. The project is called ‘Two Degrees For Africa’ and the aim is to raise over $1 million in the month of September. Everyone working on the project is donating their time for free. It will be amazing if a group of friends and friends of friends can together achieve something really big! I’ve donated to the project and I urge you all to get involved. More Info

Have a good weekend, the next two weeks these reports will be broadcast via satellite from a boat – Oh yeah, also Surfection Mosman is having a massive wetsuit sale – up to 75% of seal suits. yeha.

The colours of Bondi...

It's going to be hot and summery this weekend - get excited.

Ghostrider

This shot is very summery...I like it. Go for a beach run.

Team wave, at least they're all going the same direction...

  1. Ahh, yes, summer.

Uge, I have a suggestion – slightly off your focus on beautiful images of Bondi with little political content, however… How about a rouges gallery of drop-ins. Named and shamed when you know who they are or a close-up of those who you don’t.

Sure I get dropped in on by a million random Swede/irish/brit learner who either does not know the rules or is so focused on the 10th wave of their life that they don’t see you coming. That is annoying. However the unforgivable and friction type of drop-in is the intentional. Often done by good surfers who are locals or quasi-locals or who think they deserve every set wave that comes. (And yes, I am talking about Snaking too.)

With the egos out there, a “best of album” by repeat offenders might encourage those who drop in to pull their head in a bit.

  2. The talk of drop-ins at Bondi is getting a little tired to be honest.

You are at one of the busiest and best beaches in the world (which is a few km’s from a major international city). You enter the water knowing that’s just how it is and how it’s always going to be. Maybe take a different attitude into the water and you’ll enjoy your surf.

You want lonely waves (don’t we all) you may have to drive a little.

I’m not saying people should drop in…All I’m saying is get over it or go somewhere else.

  3. Uge can you then come to the NB’s and shame the same old offenders from Manly to Longy.

You could make a whole other website based on this concept – with you network of photographers you could get them to send/post their “carnage” shots and link them by location (I will come to you for royalties later).

    1. Hey matt – no thanks – kinda busy just taking photos of anything down the beach. Bit over the drop in talk. Going to the islands now. seeya, uge

  4. Great job on the link to the two degrees page Uge. I’ll be jumping on board and sending out a note to people I know. From little things big things grow and if a few percent of your subscribers jump on board you could really help this get going.
I love the fact that these guys aren’t taking a cut or sending you through a website that takes a cut – good on them for getting out there and putting their time and effort into this, what an outstanding contribution, they should all be very proud regardless of the result.

  5. Have donated on the twodegrees donation link and posted on my personal fb page, business fb page and sent out a whole heap of emails. These situations always seem too big to make a difference but somehow when someone with such an amazing idea makes it so easy to help – how could you possibly ignore the plea! Good on the group that began this ingenius idea.

  6. Hey shelly and Co,
We are stoked you are donating, but do it for yourself, no need to publicise you amaziningness. Your friend and brother Jhonas.

By the way, I don’t care if it is expected or what. Drop ins ruin waves, no one enjoys it, the drop-in-er or the drop-in-ee. Yes we live at the most populated beach in australia but at least someone should be able to enjoy a wave now and again.

    Drop in chat… Done

    Sorry Uge

    1. Jhonas, if you have been to the twodegreesforafrica site, you would have noted that one of their specific instructions is to let the person who passed the 2degrees email onto you know that you “are in”. Unfortuntely since Uge runs a public forum, this needed to be done publically. I am sure there were people who just donated and never told Uge however, there is some kind of feel good feeling the Uge deserves to get back knowing that his email didn’t fall on deaf ears. Had he had not a single response, he could be thinking, wow, so no one is prepared to make the effort…
      That’s just my feelings.
Would like to hope that others, although quiet, have donated.

  7. The 2 degrees project is great and peoples hearts are in the right place but coming from Africa the only thing that is going to help the poverty is for them to have less kids. The more money and aid they are given the more kids they have and the more they need. Parents who can’t feed themselves go on to have an average of 7 kids who all starve more and it’s not education they need that is just common sense. I can’t feed myself how can I feed even one kid does not even flick across their minds. That has been their way for thousands of years even before the colonials brought them what we call civilization and they won’t change. Rather spend the money saving the wildlife all over the world that is getting wiped out by us without a choice.

    1. Hey Jon – there is always someone who has to say “its great you’re trying to help, but…”. How about just “its great you’re trying to help” ?

By the way, the reason people in 3rd world countries have so many kids is because there is such a high infant mortality rate – that is, their kids are a LOT more likely to die as children (not nice). Plus, they don’t have superannuation or a government pension fund like we do… so the more kids you have, the more likely your kids will survive to grow up and look after you when you get old. That kind of IS common sense in that situation, its just not what we’re used to… Although I agree we are trashing the environment (including our beautiful ocean)… Whoa – I need a surf (without drop ins) now to cheer up !!
