Morning light on a spectacular remote beach

Lembongan

Today’s little 30-second escape comes from the blue waters of Nusa Lembongan, a small island that is a short boat ride from Bali. It’s like going back in time here. The villages remain unchanged, unaffected by the nearby mass tourism. There are no cars; just scooters and walking paths…so it’s kinda like an Indonesian version of Rottnest Island. We’ve been here together before, a few years ago. It’s a nice reprieve from busy Bali and the waves are super fun when there is some swell around. Today it’s small and only rideable on a specific tide, so here is a few snaps from a morning ride around the island. Swell shall arrive tomorrow and Wednesday here, so will have a bunch of surfing shots then.

Don’t forget the Aquabumps Gallery in Bondi is now open 7 days a week. Yep, that means today! 10am to 6pm and you will find us at 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach Tel: 9130 7788 (right behind the Bondi Hotel)

Take it easy.

  1. Thanks for posting pics of where we love and live.

Its a change from people posting pics of the bad side of Bali, its islands and the increasing waste issues. Indonesia is a third world emerging economy and as such will be battling all the issues that we in the West have forgotten that we also battled. We are working on it here. Thank you again for showing the real Bali that we know Uge!

  2. Went back to Lembongan for the first time in 7 years and was totally stunned by the amount of development that’d happened. The old path from playgrounds beach was gone and all built up with a million swanky places… shouldn’t be surprised, it’s a great joint and always a beut’ ride across on the ‘ferry’. Damn, want to book tickets now.

  3. It’s nice to see some of the good shots of Bali-the peaceful side! Living on the west coast, we often hear about the chaos of Kuta, so thanks for restoring my faith in the beauty that Bali really holds.

  4. Love the beach shot Uge, but shame about your shadow on the sand – I find that it distracts from the rest of the view. Makes me want to open it up in photoshop and make it disappear! 🙂 If only the rocky hill to your right had been a little bigger…

  5. Not sure what you mean about “unaffected by mass tourism”?? Perhaps it’s our different vintages. ;-).

In ’81 it was pretty damn good. By ’84 it was starting to get busy when “The Restaurant” and the tree-houses were right in front of Shipwreck. In ’86 the boats started dropping in on way back from the Lombok and Sumbawa trips and that did it. I might have some old photos somewhere I can scan for you – obviously, not digital – I’ll have a look. I know I got some of Ulu and Canggu from then.

Took my kids in 2008 to Lembongan – what a f***ed place now with all the commercialism. No matter, still a load of places that are *really* unaffected by the nearby mass tourism if you are prepared to look.
