The Mentawais are a chain of 70 islands off Sumatra, Indonesia. It’s about a 150 km area that hosts dozens of surf breaks, mostly only accessible by boat.
It’s remote out here; there’s not a lot of infrastructure and a whole heap of jungle. When I first visited, logging used to be a big industry – which thankfully has now been banned.
Surfing conditions are typically for the advanced shredder. 95% of the time, you’d be surfing on very shallow, sharp coral reefs ready to take a chip out of you. Most waves are hollow and powerful, just how we like em’!
We’re currently in between swells after some cooking days. Some guys on the boat have surfed 10 hours a day this week! Forecasts are fickle but show promise on the weekend. Don’t forget Father’s Day on Sunday. We’ve got plenty of stuff for the old boy – Aquabumps Gallery 151 Curlewis St. Bondi Beach.
For the past 6 trips I’ve been onboard the Ratu Motu – a killer boat which has recently been sold and returning to Australia (where it came from). After 20 years of service in the islands, it’s really sad to see it go! :: uge
unbelievable man! looks better than paradise!
