NY-See

Normally I like my islands filled with palm trees, a little right hander wrapping around one corner, ya know, in the pacific…

Well I’ve arrived at Manhattan Island NYC just for something different. Ok I haven’t seen any organic matter yet or a wave…but it’s just as amazing.

For years people have told me how much they love NYC. After spending a few days here walking the streets, I can see why. The place is alive, 24/7. Just everything is to the max. Every nook and cranny of NYC has some sort of activity. It feels like the centre of the world.

The population of New York City is 8.337 million. That’s double the whole of Sydney in this one tiny area. (59 km2)…that’s crowded! Especially when you throw in another 50 million annual tourists per year.

Manhattan has so many tall buildings on it you wonder how it doesn’t crack apart. Apparently the base of this island is solid Granite, where they pin the world’s tallest buildings. Central Park was a swamp (no granite), so that area was spared from sky scrapers.

For those readers that must see sand and ocean in their daily Aquabumps fix, we are heading to Montauk today. It is hot here! If you are planning a trip out to The Big Apple, book your local accommodation here. We’re staying around Soho but I also rate East/West Village…Chelsea or Greenwich areas.

Later, uge

Downtown Soho, mad shoppers paradise

Lower Manhattan shot from Brooklyn

Uptown Manhattan, the town that never sleeps

Ground Zero, such a sad place. New Freedom Tower in the background

Head spin

How about that for a pad

Looking down from The High Line...

West Village, the quiet end of town

Concrete in every direction

  1. Are you still in town on the weekend? Short-lived swell is forecast to hit Monty Saturday. If so, see you in the drink. Be good to catch up on local matters if you are here. I heard the Blues beat the Maroons or was that just a rumour?

    Safe travels

    1. See you back home, eventually. Miss it every day. Researching Hurricane storm surge so pulling an all nighter predicting this one. Not fond of the lack of swell on this continents East Coast but love the research. So many opportunities to work with great scientists.
You might catch the start of Arthurs swell on Friday. At this stage, wave heights at Montauk are predicted to peak late Friday arvo, but something should push in earlier in the day. Well it won’t be a lake, but it won’t be pumping Bronte in a southerly or Maccas after a TC up north.
Best wishes to Deb and the tykes. If you see Dad in the surf back home, give him a hug from me.

      Happy travels.

  2. Uninspiring – stick to what you know. New York is full of brilliant photographers; these look like holiday snaps, at best a mid level HSC art project. Sorry, but it’s true.

    1. Nonsense – I’d be delighted with 49788. I doubt there are many HSC art project students walking around with tilt-shift lenses.

    2. Dude why would you say that ? Like, where’s the upside ? More generally, who’s to say your taste should be anyone else’s taste ?

Aussie on tour, taking some snaps; beautiful thing.

  3. Enjoy lunch from the Ditch Witch food truck at Ditch Plains, and a seafood dinner at sunset at Inlet Seafood at the end of East Lake Drive in Montauk. I’m from Sydney, live in Hong Kong but have spent summers in Amagansett for 20 years.

  4. Spent ten years in NY with you making me homesick.
Moved home recently and you’ve managed to do it again.
    Love your work
    Enjoy the Apple

  5. I live in Soho and Montauk. I would love to show you around Montauk or tag along to watch you shoot. There is much natural beauty there for you to capture. Bonus, there is a hurricane brewing down south so we will have waves this weekend!

    1. Thanks for the kind offer Eddie.

I can see the storm coming…but unfortunately I have to head home after shooting some images on Friday.

In Montauk at the moment, dead flat today!

      Thanks, uge

      1. That’s too bad. Make sure you go to the bluffs at Camp Hero State park. Great shots to be had there. Can’t wait to see your Montauk photos!

  6. if you want any montauk secrets or tips just let me know…out there every weekend and am marrying a surfer this weekend so he knows the spots! We got engaged in Montauk!

  7. Billy: I think Uge can speak for himself (which he has).

I offered constructive criticism in a comments section. Have you not read art/film reviews before? I like his surfing photos, but that is beside the point. I have a right to comment on what I like or don’t – regardless of my own artistic talents (if you only new).

And ‘likes’/followers and talent are not always synonymous. How many likes are there for Gangnam style?

Ponder this Billy: “I don’t know much about art, but I know what I like”.
” Well if you don’t know much about art, I don’t care what you like”.

‘You goose’…go back to Summer bay Alf…
