Kai Hing throwing out some heat, Maroubra 7am

Pro Jnrs

Good morning.

If you are under 20 years old and take your surfing seriously you’d be at Maroubra this morning for the kick-off of the Carve Pro Junior and Ocean and Earth Teenage Rampage. It will run until Sunday and thankfully today they’ve scored a bit of swell (3ft). Dozens of hyperactive, 30 kg groms paddled out before the event to get a feel for a nice right bank in front of the lifeguard tower. There’s some amazing talent out there!

Have you been to the freshly reno’d Bondi Bowling Club? Cool ain’t it? Didn’t even know it was tucked away there at the back of Bondi. Well, over summer if you go to the bar and buy yourself a 10 buck Aperol spritz you will go into the draw to win an Aquabumps artwork. Bottoms up!

Have a great weekend, ::uge

The search for Animal Chin continues...Bondi Beach

Kalani Ball, one of the top dogs of the juniors

When the wind goes NE today you will see a lot of these airs

  1. I want to start by saying thank you for all the wonderful pictures. I love having the daily email to enjoy all those days I can not be out in the water my self.
There is just one question that keeps poping up and I have to ask, why are there so few pictures of women or girls surfing? Just as an example, in the 10 newsletters I have gotten since the new year there has been 4 pictures of girls surfing (including pictures of girsl padling out, 2 out of the 4 pictures featuring girls). You have roughly 10 pictures in each newsletter, adding up to 100 pictures in 10 letters and only 4 out of these features women surfing. There is almost always picturs of girls swiming or sunbathing but not surfing. Are there no girls out in the water where you are?
As a female surfer (beginner but non the less stoked) it would just be fun to see people out in the waves I can relate to in a more substantial way. It would be equaly boring with only female surfers. It is the mix I miss.

    1. Hey Lisa, Uge shoots what he sees, it’s not really a fair comparison to just grab the last 10 days (daily emails). Maybe it’s due to the lack of waves or substantially large crowds? Not sure, but be careful not to shoot the messenger so to speak. But if you keep going back he regularly shoots the gals mid-slide. Stay tuned.

      1. Ok, the last 10 days was just the once I had time to count but the trend is an over all impression I have gotten since I subscribed a few months back. But I’ll wait and see. It might be a temporary thing. Just do me a favour and take a look for your self, however far back you think you need to get a fair count. 🙂

        1. Hi Lisa,

Thanks for your feedback and tuning into Aquabumps. Appreciate it.

Unfortunately the vast majority of Sydney surfers are male. Bondi is changing with more girls than ever surfing – but still they’re in a minority.

I try shoot the Bondi surfer girls as much as possible. There is only a hand full of them though.

But at other beaches, like Maroubra, where I have been shooting a lot lately due to summer conditions – there is never any girls surfing.

I think the last time I saw a girl surfing at Maroubra during my morning shoots was around 1-2 years ago. It’s very rare.

I could not agree more about getting the mix right…everyone has a different opinion on the right mix and some days there is no one surfing and everyone swimming.

So I guess I just have to shoot what is happening down the beach at the time – like I’ve done for 15 years.

Thanks again, I will chase the girls surfers more, when they’re out.

          Cheers, uge

      2. Hi Uge
Thank you for answering. Sad but perfectly understandable reason then. Thank’s again for a wonderful daily email and fantastic pictures.
