Yesterday was a pretty fun day on the North Shore. The onshore Kona winds blew out my enthusiasm to shoot much. A 1.5hr drive across the island to hide from the winds just seemed all too hard. Was feeling lazy…y’know…3 weeks on The Rock can do that.
Out front the sand has been doing some crazy shapes and so has the water. The rips are rapids and the backwash can be chest high. The beach was deserted as the Superbowl was on. Jack Johnson, the eternal grommet was on the bar catching backwash out to sea and trying to reo an incoming wave – on a soft top/foamie. He’s a good waterman and spends all day down the beach. Loves it. As does his whole family.
Kelly Slater caught wind of the action and scrambled down with his softie within minutes…then along came Sunny Garcia…then Tim Reyes…for hours these big names in surf returned to their youth and were stoked messing around on a sandbar whirlpool. 4 per wave, mid wave swaps, backwash airs…good times…
The Volcom Pipe Pro is on right now. Its big and clean…oh and Slater is about to surf. Watch Live
