Chocolate Slabs

I did little research before coming out to remote Papua New Guinea for a surf mission. Actually, I did try, but there’s not much information on the place. The swell forecast charts showed endless days of 0.5m (knee-high waves), so I presumed we’d be fishing or snorkelling for most of our time.

I was pretty surprised to stumble across this psycho slab, in the middle of nowhere – with no one on it – or anyone even interested in it. The water is dark brown as a jungle river flows right into the lineup. It feels very crocodile-central to me, but I’ve been assured they’re not seen here (like they do in the Mentawais).

We scored it on a swell, and our boat load of sub-50k-gee froth lords ruled it for a morning before the winds and tide spoiled it. When a big set would arrive, it would drain the reef, so I would lie on it with camera, trying to scurry to the channel, losing some bark in the process (awesome!). Remarkably, no broken boards or serious injuries – one foot of water is sufficient for this lot.

Oh, and we do gift cards! If you need something right now for Xmas.
