Sunshine? Yeah, you bet – but I had to go 1000 clicks inland to find it, well away from the coastal drenchings this week.
Where? Broken Hill or ‘The Silver City’ (as it is sometimes called) is a city forged out of a hill that consists of almost pure silver, lead and zinc. Broken Hill is Australia’s first mining town (1883) and where the ‘Big Australian’ was born (BHP).
Walking the streets of Broken Hill and neighbouring Silverton is like stepping back in time. Donkeys, Emus, Horses, Goats roam the streets of Silverton as you keep an eye out for Mad Max and his Interceptor. There are a lot of outback artists and galleries, following the steps of the great Pro Hart who lived in Broken Hill for 77 years.
The dirt is red, trees only grew on creek lines, the air is dry and it’s bangin’ sunshine – every damn day.
