Some things have boomed during Covid and the subsequent lockdowns – some expected, some bizarre.
The property market has gone nuts, especially regional (and coastal) – well away from the spicy cough in the cities. We’re having a few more drinks earlier in the day – a direct byproduct of home-schooling. Many are adopting new pets; how many new puppies do you see around the place? About as many as pregnant tummies – a baby boom, well, we do have more time on our hands, don’t we!
Surfing is massive during Covid – boards and wetsuits walking out the (online) door and the line ups breaking records as people are all working from home with more opportunity to duck out for a quick wave. Bicycles are selling out, streaming tele subscriptions skyrocketing, and everyone seems to be renovating, as home improvements are high on the list.
There’s also a direct correlation between Covid lockdowns and booming swells. It seems to crank as soon as you see Gladys on the tele, with a serious-looking face. Throw in a bit of Hazzard, Dr. Chant with some lippy McGowan, and you’ve got flawless 4-6 surf. Maybe the epic waves have been sent to us to distract us from what’s going on land? I believe so…
Enjoy the ocean and stay positive – turn the news off.
