Which do you prefer – Northern Beaches or our Eastern Suburbs Beaches? People in Sydney have very definitive views on this hot topic. There’s a harbour between us – and they’re close together – yet very different.
The insular peninsular is very quiet, has bright orange coarse sand and a huge array of beaches and surf spots. It’s no secret, the surf is better over the north side (and more spread out) – which is why so many champion surfers come from that side. Beaches of the East tend to have whiter finer sand, few beaches and surf options – but closer to The Big Smoke and a lot busier! I have to say the traffic is nuts going North, and I think the North residents like it that way ’cause it limits numbers.
Regardless of your personal preference, we’re lucky to live in a city with so many beach options within an hour’s drive. We spent time on the weekend in “Home and Away” turf – Palmie/Whaley. No, we didn’t dance at the Avalon RSL! We love a change of scenery and they’ve got a few cracker skate parks for my tykes.
Today – unfortunately, we have onshore winds and rain forecast for weeks. I wish La Nina would have a break. It’s mental.

Nice to see you on the northern beaches! north Av a great beach fun for bodysurfing
Best/cleanest rockpools are Av Mona and Narrabeen also clean Pittwater swimming/sunsets at Sandy Point in Palmie. Bangally Headland an easy fabulous walk with incredible views and a drive to West Head lookout in the National Park – via Church Pt – overlooks Pittwater/the Hawkesbury/Lion Island showcasing sydneys northern most wonders. Enjoy!
Great suggestions, thank you Helen
