5Dee

The ocean was confused this morning. Last nights Nor-East blast put heaps of bump into the chunk. Looks like it’s also dropped a couple of feet…but there’s still a few rideable bumps wobbling into the corner (2-3 foot). After an early morning thunderstorm and shower its back to summer bakin’ paradise. (max 29 degrees). Good idea to come down to the beach before the forecasted south change lets rip this afternoon.

Canon EOS 5Dee

Warning: camera geek talk below
Today’s shots are all taken with my new little weapon – a Canon EOS 5d Mark II camera which has just hit our shores. I normally shoot with a Canon 1ds Mark III which may seem like I’m going backwards down the camera food chain – BUT this full frame puppy now has the same size chip as my 1ds Mark III– boasting a whoppin’ 21 megapixels of detail. Its attractive to shoot in the water with a smaller camera: makes swimming in 8 foot Hts so much easier, can put it on the end of a pole like today and should you get chased by a shark you’ll be able to get to the beach faster. But what’s this? the New 5dMkII even shoots Hi-Def video at 30 fps. Get out of here. That’s pretty hot. (see sample – its mind blowing) It also can shoot at ISO speeds of 6400 which is great for those low light situations. Questions/comments/ramble here

  1. the 5dmkII makes no sense as a waterhousing camera except for stylized portraits/scenery. limited focus points and slow FPS make it quiver next to your MKIII. video is also a bust for action; it will look like serious turd shaking around in your housing, and @ 30P, you will not be able to slow it down in the slightest. have fun with it!

  2. Hi Eugene

In a plane between LA and NY receiving Aquabumps download. Brought a smile to my face. Seems to be what it’s all about.

Thanks for the meeting last week. Looking forward to working something up – with positivity.

    Can’t wait for tomorrow’s addition now…

    Best
    Tony

  3. Nice one Uge! How did you find the focussing/speed limitations of the 5d compared to the 1DS? Looking at the photos, it mustn’t have been an issue. Do you use an Aquatech housing for the 5d? Any plans to put up some HD vid clips into the reports?

    Cheers,
    Ben.

  4. Oooo very nice!
    Looks like a fabulous morning!
Love the third pic, just looks so glassy.
One day we’ll have some swell in Perth…. one day…

  5. Hey Eugene,
more than interested in hearing your thoughts on the camera. I’ve been shooting with mine for three months (or thereabouts) now (was a lucky one in Australia picking up a first shipment camera) and believe it’s been a worthwhile wait on the original 5D (upgraded from 20D). I will agree with some other opinions that Canon has made serious compromises on the AF system – I’ve heard quotes from Canon that one reason was because of concerns over body size (erm, guys, this isn’t an EOS1000D we’re discussing here!!!) if a more advanced system was used. This is where Nikon currently has the edge (that and superior customer service). I’m locked into Canon due to my legacy, and while the camera is brilliant I know where the shortcomings are and am a little annoyed that it will be another 18-40months before we see a replacement for the 5DMkII when it can’t even meet the AF system on the D300/D700.

Anyhow, if you or your readers are interested in seeing some low light work – namely gigs – try http://flickr.com/jufemaiz http://flickr.com/mulletgod http://flickr.com/dreadfuldan http://flickr.com/willreichelt (a bunch of Sydney music photographers including myself now rocking the 5DMkII).

Cheers + thanks for your daily updates – yesterdays brought a smile to my face 🙂

    Cheers,
    Joel

PS: when will there be a http://twitter.com/aquabumps 😉

  6. Mate! I used to check out your pics several times a day when i was living in Bondi nearly two years ago and i remember waving a peace sign at you when i was shooting on my birthday morning 😉 now that i’m back in Switzerland this moto hasn’t changed and aquabumps is my homepage. i brought back 4 of your pictures, they are hanging on my wall and i regret i didn’t purchase more of them! In short, your daily updates are a true breath of fresh air and despite living in some of the most amazing mountains of the world, you make me miss the ocean everyday! this is how good your pictures feel! however, i hate you for having a 5D mark ii because i ordered mine a month and a half ago but didn’t get a hand on it yet…. hope to see some vids one of these days, would be a nice and refreshing way of waking up in the morning!

Cheers for all the dream and keep on believing in what you do…

  7. Just came back from a trip to Antarctica (luminous landscapes) and we had around 26 5Dee’s aboard out of which 8 stopped working for no reason. Most of them unrecoverably so.
It seems like the seals are not great, so make sure there is no water leaking in your housing, Uge, or you may find yourself buying another one soon. 🙂

  8. Hi, the 5d MKII goes for about $4k…quite a lot cheaper than my $11k 1dsMkIII. I am swimming in the water (with a camera on a pole) on that day…(no body board – that just doesn’t work.) Its pretty tiring. I swam for 2 hours on that morning. I don’t have any decent video footage – yet. I am new to it and it takes quite a bit of adapting to. So, what this space. Also got the smaller 5d so I can do board cams in Indonesia this year…they’re going to be HOT. (remote triggers – yeah baby)

  9. Hey Ben, the 1dsMKIII focusing is superior to the 5d…well it ought to be for $6k more. But really depends on what you’re shooting. I would still use my 1dsMkIII for beach shooting…most of the time. I am so used to it…and can control it so well with 45 active focus points (starting to sound like a canon geek)
