Each morning is very unique down at Bondi. I guess that’s what makes it interesting in the 10 years that I’ve been shooting these sunrise photographs. I mean, the first thing I saw at 6:30am was a 60 foot luxury motor yacht going hell for leather across the bay. I thought to myself that can’t be legal and Lifeguard Kerrbox would be having a fit as it vanished around to Tama in a smokey high speed wake. Hope no bay swimmers were out to far gettin’ mowed down by the Miami Vice style monster. Then looking to my left I watched 200 police assemble. No idea why. Didn’t seem like an emergency nor was there an Aquabumps street party planned. How strange.
But the most unique thing about this morning was the calm before the storm. It was dead still at 6:30am. You could hear people talking miles away. The water surface was indo-like sheet-glass and, surprisingly, a 2 foot wave popped up every 30 minutes amongst pure flatness. The Mal Riders were dominating the solo peak. The skies were brilliant. Clouds stretched and buckled creating photogenic patterns. 10am now and a wintery mess has dawned upon us. Back to cold 20 degrees and a rainy, windy day. No surf to be had now.
