So… after 420 hrs of surfing amongst 3 solid ground swells in 12 days, 7 blokes (with 7 crook backs) travelled 428 nautical miles on the boat. Over the tour: 440 cans of Bintang beer were drank, 5 massages, 24 packets of Tim Tams, 2.3 litres of sunscreen used, 4 bottles of bourbon, 4 broken surfboards and 1 left at check in as the excess baggage was too steep. 6,750 litres of diesel burnt, we also drank 200 litres of water, 3,456 photos were taken, 24 hrs of video footage filmed, surfing 4 new breaks that we didn’t even know existed, oh and we also watched 32 DVDs, 3 ear infections and countless hours of talking pointless jibber on deck. The best thing about the Mentawais is the variety of waves – we surf 12 different breaks – 1 a day. A good trip. One of the best.
Sending these reports from a boat via satellite is quite amazing. Sitting on the roof of the boat facing antennas to space beaming 5 lo-res images and a chunk of ramble back to Sydney via Texas (and space). It is all happening whilst a man sits next to the boat in a dugout canoe selling his wooden carvings. Special thanks to Telstra for generously sponsoring the satellite connection.
